Scleral Contact Lenses
Scleral lenses are large-diameter gas permeable contact lenses that vault the cornea (the front part of the eye) and rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye). This vault provides a smooth optical surface that works to correct keratoconus and other corneal irregularities. These lenses also create a “pool” of tears between the eye and the lens which makes for great comfort and helps with significant dry eye.
Because of the large diameter of scleral lenses, they provide more stability than conventional corneal gas permeable lenses – they are less likely to dislodge. This stability also helps to enhance comfort over traditional gas permeable lenses.
